Our adult assessment team provides the following single concern testing evaluations:
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Adult ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that continues from childhood or can be diagnosed in adulthood. It is characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interfere with daily functioning and quality of life.
Impact:
- Work: Difficulty meeting deadlines, managing time, and staying organized.
- Relationships: Impulsivity and inattention can strain personal relationships.
- Daily Life: Challenges in completing everyday tasks, maintaining routines, and managing responsibilities.
Diagnosis and Treatment:
- Diagnosis: Typically involves a detailed clinical assessment, often including questionnaires, interviews, and reviewing history.
- Treatment: Commonly includes medication (e.g., stimulants like Adderall or non-stimulants), behavioral therapy, lifestyle changes, and coping strategies
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
(ASD) in adults is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by persistent challenges in social communication and interaction, along with restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities. The “spectrum” aspect of ASD means that the severity and combination of symptoms can vary widely among individuals.
Impact on Daily Life:
- Employment: Challenges with social communication and sensory sensitivities can make it difficult to navigate typical work environments. However, adults with ASD often excel in roles that align with their interests and strengths.
- Relationships: Navigating social dynamics, understanding social expectations, and maintaining relationships can be challenging.
- Independence: Some adults with ASD may live independently, while others may require varying levels of support.
Diagnosis and Treatment:
- Diagnosis: Diagnosis in adulthood often involves a comprehensive evaluation by a psychologist or psychiatrist, including interviews, questionnaires, and a review of developmental history.
- Treatment and Support: There is no cure for ASD, but various interventions can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. These include behavioral therapy, social skills training, occupational therapy, and sometimes medication to address specific symptoms like anxiety or depression.
- Support Networks: Support from family, friends, and community resources can be crucial in helping adults with ASD navigate daily life.
Adults with ASD may not have been diagnosed as children, particularly if they have milder symptoms or if they developed compensatory strategies to manage social situations. Understanding and accepting their unique strengths and challenges can help improve their quality of life and integration into society.
